The church through out the generations has been known by its service to the community. In the first days of the Christian Church, Luke records in the Book of Acts that they would distribute aid to all who had need. They worshipped together, prayed together, and served together “with glad and generous hearts.” And in so doing, they gained “the good will of all the people.” Even those who were not Christian recognized that this group of people were special and they were special because of their service and love.
At St. Mark by the Sea Lutheran Church, we believe that service to others is an opportunity God gives to us — not an obligation. Through service to and with others, we become the hands and feet of Christ in the world. God is using our hands to do his work and we are thrilled to be part of God’s mission. We believe that when we serve others, we find meaning and purpose for our own lives.
“When you are covered by a quilt, you are covered by love.” So goes the old saying. For several years, the women of St. Mark by the Sea have gathered each week to make quilts to give to those in need. Each quilt is lovingly assembled and then a special dove block is sewn on as the women's “signature” before it is sent on its way.
Over the years, St Mark Piece Corps quilts have been sent to local women and children’s shelters. They have given comfort and shelter to hurricane victims in Florida, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bundles of quilts have been shipped across the ocean and have warmed shoulders and babies from the Balkans to southern Africa. Recently, one of our Piece Corps members saw a picture of a quilt covering a woman in Africa, and there on the quilt was the St. Mark dove block signature — half a world away. The love of St. Mark by the Sea truly surrounds the world.
You are invited to join this hard-working group of women each Wednesday morning. You don't have to be an exert quilter or even an expert sewer. The helpful hands that have made so many quilts are eager and willing to teach you all you need to know. There are several jobs to be done — and there is always the need for more hands.
Not only will you help to provide warmth to those who need it, you yourself will also be warmed by the love you share and receive from the other Piece Corps members. The coffee break chat is a very important ingredient that makes up the love these women put into each quilt. You are always welcome to join us!
